Last Sunday morning in church, the congregation was asked, "Why are you here?"  The pastor gave an answer that, we had to admit, was the truth, at least for some, if not for many. Some well-meaning folks come out of habit; they had always come to church since they were children. It's just what they do!  Some came because they are trying to be righteous; they were working hard to do what they thought was right. The extreme form of this is called "works righteousness" or "self-righteousness."  Yet some come to worship along with other worshippers, letting their hearts and voices show their love for Jesus Christ and their love for each other.

Through history, there have always been people who worship for other reasons rather than their love for God. In the words of Zechariah, Chap. 7, verse 4, "Then the word of the Lord came to me (Zechariah):  'Ask all the people  of the land and the priests, 'When you fasted and mourned in the past 70 years, was it really for me (the Lord) that you fasted?  And when you were eating and drinking, were you not just feasting for yourselves?'  Are these not the words the Lord proclaimed through the earlier prophets?'  But they refused to pay attention."

The Study::  "The Israelites had lost their sincere desire for a loving relationship with God.  They had been fasting without a proper attitude of repentance or worship.  They fasted and mourned during their exile with no thought of God or sins that had caused their exile in the first place.  God says that an attitude of worship without a sincere desire to know and love Him will lead to ruin."

When Jesus was on this earth, he saw through those who came to him without a repentant heart or sincere love. He saw right through them. But, he met with the curious, the sorrowing, the sick and the dying.  He turned no one away and neither does the church. The church, as did Jesus, keeps their "arms" open wide for any and all.  And the church hopes that those that come for any reason will be caught up in the abundant love and joy that many people have received that they might, in turn, give away to others, just as Jesus had always done, just as the church was born to do, and we are the church.

I love church!  I love every part of it.  We have wonderful music, with a live band and lay people as worship leaders, singing along with us.  Their love for Christ is contagious, leading us to become infected with the same wonderful "heart disease"-- love.  I love our pastors; whether they preach or lead us in communion,  their presence reminds us of the leadership they offer to us that we might find the forgiveness and  reality of worship that Christ wants for His own.

Next time you ask yourself, Why do I go to church? or Why don't I go to church? May your answer be a true one so you can know yourself.  I hope you find a loving God there!

Remember to pray for all the world to know and love Jesus Christ and each other!

THIS PRESENT HOUR

Still reading the book of Luke brought me to Luke 12:54, "Jesus speaking to the crowd said, 'When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, "It's going to rain," and it does.  And when the south wind blows, you say, "It's going to be hot," and it is.  Hypocrites!  You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky.  How is it that you do not know how to interpret this present time?"

About this passage, the Study says: "For most of recorded history, the world's principal occupation was farming.  The farmer depended on the weather for his livelihood.  He needed just the right amount of sun and rain--not too much, not too little--to make his living, and he grew skilled at interpreting natural signs.  Jesus was announcing an earthshaking event that would be much more important than the year's crops--the coming of God's Kingdom.  Like a rain-storm or a sunny day, there were many signs that the kingdom of God would soon arrive.  But Jesus' hearers, though skilled at interpreting weather signs, were intentionally ignoring the signs of the times."

We here in MN also are weather-watchers.  We think spring is always late until we finally see robins in the grass searching for worms.  Winter is always too long with too much snow and too much shoveling, and we search the sky for a different look and wish for robins.  Summer is always too short and Fall could last forever as it's so beautiful and we know what will follow way too soon.

Some of us here in MN are also watching the world for other messages.  We watch the confusion and the heartache in Africa with Ebola deaths and terrorists killings and the fear that is among the nations of the Mid-East, either men or women, as to who will be killed next.  Christians are asked to leave or be killed and Sunnis and Shiites are forever at war. Yes, our world is overcrowded, but killing one another just cannot be what our God wants---or anybody else's god for that matter. But the signs are apparent for any of us that are watching the world's signs,.  Something is afoot and it looks like deep trouble.

Can we help?  Prayer is the only thing I can think of.  Prayer to God that in spite of all these other strange worlds around us, God can and will lead His people to do what we must do, and--this is important--in agreement.

I can pray.  I am not as good as others in determining how God answers. But, I can watch the signs and try to run the thoughts I may have past you, my readers, for your interpretations.

But, all in all, let us NOT be like the tortoise sticking his head in the sand.  Let us look up and out and try to find the signs that God will surely give us, His people.

Winter is coming. I can tell by my rheumatism! But so?  Spring will follow! Open your eyes and see!
And Jesus is always here, don't forget! So, let's be at those prayers!

WHAT CAN I DO?

In 520 B.C., the people of Jerusalem once again heard from a prophet who was trying to call them to  action to rebuild the temple of God.  The prophet's name was Haggai.  In Hag. 1:3, the Lord said to Haggai, "Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while my house remains a ruin?"

In the Study that follows the scripture, we read, "God asked his people how they could live in luxury when his house was lying in ruins.  The temple was the focal point of Judah's relationship with God, but it was still demolished.  Instead of rebuilding the temple, as the people worked for themselves, the less they had, because they ignored their spiritual lives.  The same happens to us.  If we put God first, he will provide for our deepest  needs.  If we put him in any other place, all our efforts will be futile.  Caring only for our physical needs while ignoring our relationship with God, will lead to ruin.
The people listened to Haggai and began rebuilding the temple just 23 days after his message to them.  Rarely did a prophet's message produce such a quick response."

How often do we hear a great sermon and think, "I need to do that," only to leave the church and forget to act.  We must ask ourselves, "What should I do about it?"  And then put a plan into action.

In our house on Tuesday mornings, we have a small group from our church.  While we are together this is the question that we ask of one another.  What am I going to do about the message that I heard? We pray, then, for one another, and try to check in with one another about our progress.  It isn't perfectly done, but it is a start.  And we are sincere with one another and hopeful for one another.

I love going to church at our church.  The music and the Word and the teaching of the Word warm my heart so very much.  And I try to figure out what God wants me to do about His teaching so I can be ready on Tuesday morning to respond whole heartedly to that question, What are you going to do about it?

Someday, God may ask me, What did you do about what you heard preached?  I am hoping He won't have to ask.  I am hoping it will be apparent.  I am hoping He will say, "Well done, good and faithful servant!"

I have the same hope for you, my friend. I hope your meeting with the Lord will be an explosion of love and joy!

With the hope that we are in this thing together!

YOUR LIFE IN CHRIST...AND MINE

The ninth chapter of Luke brings us many indications of God's power.  In this chapter, Jesus sends his twelve disciples out for the first time to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick.  We learn, too, that Herod, the emperor, is concerned about who this Jesus really is.  Certainly he cannot really believe he is the Son of God!  We also read that Jesus fed thousands of people with only five loaves of bread and two fish! "My goodness," we are bound to say,  "Is this a joke?"

But wait, there's more! In the ninth chapter Study we find: "To the astonishment of Peter, John, and James,  --Jesus appears, glowing,  along with the figures of Moses, who represents  the Law, and Elijah, representing the Prophets, with God's voice singling out Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah telling the three apostles who were witnesses that Jesus  would fulfill both the Law and the Prophets." (Matt. 5:17)  Hallelujah!

In this same chapter is a declaration of what Jesus expects from those who agree to follow him.  Luke 9:23 and 24 reads, "If anyone would come after me (follow), he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me, will save it."

Now, that is tough to hear! Does Jesus want us to die?  Losing one's life usually means  "to die."  Well, the answer to that, as I know it, is "Yes."  We are asked to die,  but not to never live in the world again.  No.  It means to die to self.  And that is complicated enough!

What it means to die to self, at least in my understanding, is to not place yourself first in importance.  Christ Jesus comes before our own selves, which also means we think first of what Jesus would have us do, have us think about, study for, write about, plan for, etc.  Jesus and His desire for us comes first before anything else or anyone else.  His word is my command.

For example,( and forgive me if I have written about this before) I had long suffered for believing I was "born bad."  And I continued to act badly, according to me.  God put a stop to it!  No more! Basically, I was told, "Do not see yourself in any way other than as I see you. Love yourself as I love you."  And if you do hurt someone, go to that person and ask forgiveness." ( God is very big on forgivingness and in our asking for it!)  Putting myself out there as "bad" was like thinking too much and worrying about myself.  He must come first!

In the study for this chapter, I learned, "People are willing to pay a high price for something they value.  Is it any surprise that Jesus would demand this much commitment from His followers?  There are at least three conditions that must be met by people who want to follow Jesus.  We must be willing to deny self,  to take up our crosses, and to follow him.  Anything else is superficial lip service."

Eventually, you will learn what it means to deny self.  And you will know how to take up your cross.  Even, to follow Him, you will also come to know. Each of us , in turn, have to come to this same place.

Protect your Life in Christ, and trust the Holy Spirit to teach you, as He is always there. The same goes for me.

BBEING PART OF THE FAMILY OF GOD

In Luke 8 we learn that "Jesus traveled from one town and village to another, preaching the good news of the kingdom of God.  The Twelve were with Him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and some diseases.  Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many other women were helping to support (Jesus' work) out of their own means."

In the following study, I learned: "Jesus lifted women up from the agony of degradation and servitude to the joy of fellowship and service.  In Jewish culture, women were not supposed to learn from rabbis. (Only boys went to Hebrew school.)  By allowing these women to travel with Him, Jesus showed that all people are equal under God.  He had driven demons out of some and had healed others.  These women allow us to catch a glimpse of a few of the people behind the scenes in Jesus' ministry.  The ministry of those in the foreground is often supported by those whose work is less visible but just as essential.  Offer your services to God, whether or not you will be on center stage."

Jesus loved those with Him like a family.  Those who hear and obey his words are all in His family.  Christ offers us an intimate fellowship with Him and others who love Him when we use what He teaches us.  No matter who we are or how late we have joined in Christ's work of changing the world one by one, there are always ways we can be of help.

All we have to do is ask, "How can I help?" You may hear many answers.  So, bring them to God, then follow God carefully as to what you are going to do, and trust God to lead you in it.

Let others know what you are doing and ask them to keep you and your work in their prayers.

I will be praying for all of you and your work every time God brings you to my mind.

Let's get busy!

MORE ABOUT JESUS THANKS TO LUKE

There is a great story about Jesus in the book of Luke, Chapter 7. The story tells of a Roman soldier who's well-loved servant was dying. The soldier was a centurion who was in charge of 100 men and he sent for Jesus because he believed Jesus was sent from God. The study tells us "apparently he  recognized that the Jews possessed God's message to mankind and it is recorded that his servant loved the nation of Israel and had helped to build its synagogue.  The centurion, rather than coming to Jesus himself, sent Jewish elders to Jesus to ask for his help.  As an army captain, he delegated work and sent groups on missions."  Therefore, he assumed Jesus would do the same and He would "but say the word and my servant will be healed." (Luke 7:7)  and in verse 9, Jesus answered, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."

The study goes on to say, "This centurion's faith was especially amazing to Jesus because he was a Gentile who had not been brought up to know a loving God."

Many of us have not been brought up to know a loving, faithful, good God, either.  Yet, we, too, can come to believe in God, to know without question that God is good and He is glad to give us His gift of life.  All we need do is ask for it, praise God for it, and use our lives to do His will.

The Centurion in his faith saw God at work in the healing of his servant through the message sent by Jesus.  It would be interesting to know how his life changed through Christ's gift of healing.  Perhaps we must imagine all that may have changed for him, by seeing the change in our own lives!

What manifests change?  First, we must ask. Then, we must trust, even when or if it appears that there has been no change at all. In fact, some circles suggest we act as if there is a change. Acting as if sounds a little fake to me, but its reasoning is the act, even if it is not natural, can become natural in time.

What is it that might need change? Old bad habits that might hurt others or ourselves, or God. Speech patterns, such as speaking cruelly about another, or using words that are not kind or are gutter-like. Our mouths sometimes need over-hauls, our eyes need to send  gentleness and kindness, our hearts need to be more charitable. Everything about us needs to be checked over by God.  He will let us know in kind ways just what is needed--and a little at a time.  He does not demand.  He suggests, with sincerity.  Sometimes we have hurtful thoughts about ourselves and these things may be the most difficult to change.

All in good time. The main thing is to trust God and be sincere. He will show you the way.

As I send out this blog to the unknown world, I pray that whomever it contacts will come to know the love of God.  There is no other love like it and is the model for what we have come to know as love, which has all the elements of trust, joy, sharing, and goodness.

He is showing me the way to truly love,

EXCERPTS FROM "THE SHACK"

I read "THE SHACK'', a book written by Wm. Paul Young some time ago and really enjoyed it. Recently, a copy came to me from my daughter, Peg, and I would like to share a bit with you, a portion of the book that helped me understand God a little bit better.

First, let me set the "stage."  A man named Mack is going through a terrible tragedy, the death of a young daughter, kidnapped and murdered. He had not been a perfectly satisfied man, ever, yet he loved his family and now finds himself hating the man who killed his daughter.  Plus, he did not trust God because God had not stopped the man from hurting his little girl.  Mack asked himself, "Who did God really love in this set of circumstances.? If God really loved the little girl, why did he not save her from death?"

Page 192, 193,,,     "Mack begins, "But if I understand what you're saying the consequences of our selfishness are part of the process that  brings us to the end of our delusions and helps us find you.  Is that why you don't stop every evil?  Is that why you didn't warn me that my daughter was in danger or help us find her?"  The accusing tone was no longer in Mack's voice..

(God answers)) "If  only it were that simple, Mack. Nobody knows what horrors I have saved the world from 'cause people can't see what never happened.  All evil flows from independence and independence is your choice.  If I were to simply revoke all the choices of independence, the world as you know it would cease to exist and love would have no meaning.  This world is not a playground where I keep all my children free from evil.  Evil is the chaos of this age that you brought to me, but it will not have the final say.  Now it touches everyone I love, those who follow me and those who don't.  If I take away the consequences of people's choices, I destroy the possibility of love.  Love that is forced is no love at all."

"Let me tell you one of the reasons that it makes no sense to you.   It's because you have such a small view of what it means to be human.  You and this creation are incredible, whether you understand that or not.  You are wonderful beyond imagination,.  Just because you make horrendous and destructive choices does not mean you deserve less respect for what you inherently are--the pinnacle of my creation and the center of my affection."

"Don't forget that in the midst of all your pain and heartache, you are surrounded by beauty, the wonder of creation, art, your music and culture, the sounds of laughter and love, of whispered hopes and celebrations, of new life and transformation, of reconciliation and forgiveness.  These also are the results of your choices, and every choice matters, even the hidden ones.  You demand your independence but then complain that I actually love you enough to give it to you."

"My purposes are not for my comfort, or yours.  My purposes are always and only an expression of love.  I purpose to work life out of death, to bring freedom out of brokenness and turn darkness into light.  What you see as chaos, I see as a fractal.  All things must unfold, even though it puts all those I love in the midst of a world of horrible tragedies--even the One closest to me...Jesus." (End of quote.)

I hope this was encouraging and enlightening.  It was for me.  So many are looking to Jesus Christ, for answers to the dilemmas within our world. And I am so glad and grateful.

I pray you and I will grow closer by knowing the Father and the Son through these words.

PS. The Holy Spirit, too!

THE RIVER OF LIFE

I read in this morning's paper, The St. Paul Pioneer Press, that the city of Stillwater is to purchase about 2 miles of the St. Croix River's frontage just north of Stillwater for a park. Oh. happy day! The city has been looking for just such a site for a long time. I look forward to another  summer warm enough to want to take a swim!  Our summer this year, so they say, was not typical!  Funny...I liked it!  Minnesota summers here are often hot in the afternoon with humidity.  Once and awhile it gets up to 90 degrees.  Coming from Arizona summers where you gave to be brave to handle the summer days, MN summers are a cinch.

Of all the rivers I have crossed or seen or stepped in, the St. Croix River is my favorite.  For many years our family boated on the St. Croix and for a while we even lived on a boat in the summer. It is a beauty of a river!

But any kind of flowing water gives me a sense of serenity, as well as a sense of power. Perhaps that is why the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, speaks often of  rivers.  Different authors, writing about different times, may possibly be speaking of the same river in the setting of Israel and Judah as rivers have a way of wandering. The study tells me: "Rivers are associated with the river in the Garden of Eden (See Gen.2:10).  The river symbolizes life from  God and the blessings that flow from His throne.  It is a gently, safe, deep river, expanding as it flows, transforming the world and ourselves no matter how lifeless or corrupt we may be.  Even when we feel messed up and beyond hope, his power can heal us, our lives having a river flow covering rocks and rills"

Rivers are life-giving just as God gives us life and life-everlasting. Give Him a moment or two of your time, and thank Him for the things of nature that keep us interested in the world around us. Enjoy His Presence along with the waters that you love.

I pray you may know a river that flows near to you,  and near to your heart as the St. Croix does to mine. I think someday I'd like to be part of that river!

The river has a heart that beats just like yours and mine.  Can you hear it?

LUKE.....A GENTILE CHRISTIAN APOSTLE

Studying the Gospel of Luke is often part of the Christmas tradition.  The first few chapters of Luke deal with the wonderful and mysterious story of the birth of Jesus.  I hope to still be around, come Christmas, to go into it thoroughly with my friends and readers. I never tire of the wonder of God.

At the time to write about Christ's birth, we will be reminded of Luke, the man thought to be a Gentile, yet  became  one of Christ's Apostles. But we will begin by looking at  him personally.  He was a missionary for God  by following Paul on some of Paul's missionary journeys. but Luke always wanted to record the birth and death of Jesus in an accurate way. Luke was a physician and liked his t's crossed and i's dotted. His thoroughness and his clinical knowledge was imperative to keep the eye witness accounts of Jesus' life preserved accurately that they might be transmitted correctly to the next generation. He became a great historian of the times.

Many others had written accounts of Jesus and His life, death and resurrection.  But, as I mentioned, truth was important to Luke, therefore he relied heavily on eye-witness accounts.  And used his skills of observation and analysis to thoroughly investigate the stories about Jesus.

Study: "Because the gospel is founded on  historical truth, our spiritual growth must involve careful, disciplined, and thorough investigation of God's Word, so that we can understand how God has acted in history. Christianity doesn't say, "Close your eyes and believe!" Rather, it says,"Check it out for yourselves!"

So, we must be like Luke did, we must investigate the bible, and its claims, thoroughly.  Take part in a bible study, or get a knowledgeable Christian friend to help you learn and understand. Our conclusions about Jesus is a life and death matter-- Our life and our deaths.

But, back to Luke.... My own Bible made an interesting statement about Luke.  "Luke has a unique way of seeing women in the Biblical era.  He shows special concern for them throughout his gospel."  It might be rather fun to watch for this concern for women.  The bible was  written by men, I do believe! So, let us watch for this uniqueness and enjoy what he has to say!

I pray I haven't over-ridden the plan God has for us by promising something He may not think important!  What am I saying?  Of course, women are important to God!  But...(and that's a big but)God may not have anything like that in mind.  So, we shall just wait and see.

What does God have in mind for us?

A DAY TO REMEMBER

This has been a wonderful day! Sunny, but fall-like jacket-weather, and we made a 45 minute drive through rock, fields, trees of varying colors, and little traffic up to the magnificent St. Croix River from Stillwater, MN to Taylor's Falls, MN.  But, the best of all, was seeing once again a childhood friend!

Her name is LaDonna, but I have called her Donna, the short version, for as long as I can remember. We met when we were in elementary school here in MN. Then, and all the way into our marriages, we have been close friends.  She knew Jerry from his and my beginning.  I knew her husband, Ray, as he was a schoolmate of ours. Her eldest son, Jeff, is our God-son.

I didn't have many friends, when I was young as we moved so many times....15 times in 15 years. But she made up for a multitude.  We were quite a pair.  As teenagers, we tried cigarettes and beer.  Of course!  And she had lots of boyfriends.  I didn't! She went to confirmation at her church; I didn't!

Yes, we were much the same, but still very, very different. When her family went on vacation, I went, too.  When I went to my Aunt Joyce's for a bit of summer fun, she went, too.

After Jerry and I moved to Arizona, Donna and I didn't see each other very much, but we always called the other when it was the other's birthday! I didn't realize what a gift that was until now, as it gave us the means to remember the other distinctly.  And now, both being 80 years plus, seeing Donna again was like old times, with no hemming or hawing around with each other.

Our hubbies get along well, too, and we met for lunch today, right beside the St. Croix River!  My favorite friend, my favorite River, and my favorite husband!  What a day!

When God blesses us with friends, even one friend, it's our job to take good care of the relationship.
So, Dear Lord, I pray that my friend, Donna, her husband, Ray, and her children and grandchildren will be under your care, as I would so much like to see her again. At our age, we have to hope there will still be time for another visit....maybe in the spring.

Thank you for all your blessings to both families, Lord, and watch over us now and on into our lives in Eternity!

To all friends, and friends of friends..... a happy day in God's loving embrace!

THE HELPER ARRIVES!

The word we use for the arrival of the Helper, the One who Jesus promised, is Pentecost.  I'm not sure if the word has any meaning except in church circles.  There it as known as the arrival of the Holy Spirit!

Jesus promised His disciples in His last days that God would not leave them with emptiness.  After He was gone they would receive a friend, part of Jesus Himself, to help them change the world.  The people who had supported Jesus and who waited in anticipation for this Helper, found themselves altogether  in one room waiting, hoping, anticipating.  Suddenly, the wind blew and blew and it was likened to hurricane force, and then flames began to shoot up and around them, and they were afraid.  But they quieted as the wind and flames quieted, and they knew the Helper was present.

And in the months and years to come, they became more and more familiar with the Helper, and they soon discovered that when they prayed the Helper would always arrive.   It was like turning on a switch; He was switched on..by prayer. Through the years He became a familiar friend, and He always reminded them of Jesus, for the Helper is Jesus' Spirit within us.

.    The first twelve disciples were joined by many other disciples, so many that their names are no longer remembered.  Now they number in the millions, all those who want to pattern their lives on the original Twelve who were taught with Jesus' own voice. Over the years the disciples
discovered more and more ways that the Spirit would help them.  It was exciting, also, to be able to read from a Book about the work that the earliest disciples had done. In the Book, also, was a list of the kind of things the Holy Spirit did to help them start the church and these "helps" have been written down for those who still follow  the work of the early church.

Here is a list of the work of the Holy Spirit.                   He is always available to us through prayer:

He gives strength for extraordinary tasks....Judges 3:10   Helps us speak for Christ.....Mt. 10:19,20
Gives us a change of heart.........................Mt.12:34,36    He may test us......................Lk. 4:1

Does not make us immune to temptation........Acts 5:3     Guides us away from wrongs Acts 16:7-9
Increases opportunities for witnessing......    Acts22:30     Gives power for Christian Life Rom.8:2
Helps us Pray............................................Rom.8:26,27    Helps us know God's thoughts1Cor.2:15,16

I hope this list is useful for you. (The entire list is available in the Life Application Study Bible)  But most of all, I hope this list helps you to know the Holy  Spirit.

Remember, He is only a prayer away!

EXALTING MY LORD AND KING!

Yesterday was Sunday!  I love Sundays because I go to worship God in a place where we are encouraged to sing out in praise to God and clap with the  beat of the music because our hearts are also singing! I love the prayer time and sharing communion.  Just as Jesus shared his bread as his body and his wine as his blood with his disciples on the night he was betrayed, so he shared Himself with me yesterday. It is a joyous time because the Holy Spirit starts my week off with a huge portion of love.

Will there be a time someday when all people will join in celebrating the Christ?  Could a day come when the world would once more remember who it is that placed each of us here on this earth?  And when all are remembering, will we praise God together?  Oh, I do hope so!

I was reminded of this hope this morning when I read Psalm 145.  Ps.145:1."I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever.  Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever."  King David, it is believed, wrote this psalm, he himself certain that someday a time will come when all people will join together in recognizing and worshiping God.* ( * according to a Bible postscript.)

The study explained, "Praise is given to God, not only for what he does--his creation, his blessings, his forgiveness--but also for who he is--loving, just, faithful, forgiving, and patient.  Time, too, when the praise of God is shared with others and they, too, are encouraged to praise Him."

Let us share our love for God in praise and thanksgiving!  Let us share our praise with one another for all He has done for us!

Oh, our precious Lord, "We will exalt you, Oh God our King!  We will praise your name for ever and ever!  We do remember that you placed us on this earth, and for that we give you thanks.  We do remember your love, your justice, your faithfulness, your forgiveness, and your patience with us. and we thank you.  We extol your name for ever and ever and pray for the day when all people will praise your Name and the heavens will echo the praise and thanksgiving of that day! Amen"

May the Lord hear our prayer and be pleased.

TURN, TURN, TURN

When I was a very little girl, I bit my brother in the back and would not tell him I was sorry. I cannot tell you just how old I was, but I assume I was old enough to know better.  Now, I was punished, naturally, for not saying I was sorry, and that's OK. by my book.  But, what I can't understand to this day is....why would a small child refuse to be sorry?  What kind of thinking was going on in my little mind that I would refuse, and refuse, and refuse?  No amount of spankings changed my mind!  What stubbornness was I born with?  Why did I not care if I was labeled "naughty"? Later on, when I was considerably older, I did not want to be called "naughty" for any reason!

I mention this because the scripture lesson for me today spoke of God's view of people who have offended him through sin.  Ezekiel 33:10 says, speaking of the exiles in Babylonia, "Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away because of them.  How then can we live?  The Lord says, "I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but (would) rather they turn from their ways and live...The righteousness of the righteous man will not save him if he disobeys, and the wickedness of the wicked man will not cause him to fall when he turns from it."  And verse 33:20, "I will judge each of you according to his own ways."

Study/ "The exiles in Babylonia were discouraged by their past sins.  This is a turning point at that time as until now the people had refused to accept their sins.  Now, they have heavy guilt for rebelling against God for so many years. Therefore, God assured them of forgiveness if they repented.

God wants everyone to turn to Him!  No matter how many times we have to make and remake that same turn! God looks at what we are and will become, not what we have been.  God gives each of us an opportunity to turn to Him, but each of us must be willing to make that turn to Him when it is offered.  Sometimes it will be necessary for us to make restitution for our wrongs and God will lead us to that place when it is necessary.

Once we turn to God and obey His direction, there is no longer heaviness or the feeling of being soiled...there is a new feeling of cleanliness and oneness with God, and a distinct lightness of heart.

Oh, for the ability to say, " I am so sorry, my sweet brother!  Forgive me.  Please forgive me!" My brother has been dead now for 12 years, and I hope someday to meet him in the Heavenly Places and give his neck a hug!

Turn to God, my Friend, and confess to Him whatever is in the way of His perfect Friendship!

LET'S BE GOD'S PARTNERS

As I continued to read this morning about the life of Daniel in the land of Babylon, I was taken by his ability to interpret the dreams of Nebuchadnezzar, the king who reigned at that time. No one else knew what the dream of the king meant, but Daniel explained:  The king was like a huge tree, and the tree was destroyed, leaving just the stump.  Where animals had been nurtured by the green grass beneath this tree, the fruit of the tree, and the lovely leaves which adorned the tree, all were gone now, but the stump. A heavenly messenger came and told the king that this place, this stump would be himself, the King, and where he would live for a time, so he would learn to "renounce his sins by doing what is right, and change his wickedness by being kind to the oppressed." (Dan.4:27)

It makes one wonder how Daniel came to understand the meaning of dreams. Perhaps it was a gift from God.  I have had dreams that I could hardly remember, let alone be able to interpret them! When my children were young, they used to tell their dreams at breakfast time.  Even their dad had dreams!  I suppose I had them, but very rarely remembered any. Dreams fascinate me and what they mean fascinates me even more.

As you have heard me say before, the book of JESUS CALLING, by Sarah Young has been a great benefit.  This morning, having been interrupted quite early in my sleep, brought me to this book very early.  Jesus says, by the words of Sarah Young,  "Receive my peace, it is my continual gift to you.  The best way to receive this gift is to sit quietly in my Presence, trusting Me in every area of your life.  Quietness and trust accomplish far more than you can imagine: not only in you, but also on earth and in heaven.  When you trust Me in a given area, you release that problem or person into My care."  It seems to me this is an incredible gift to be given!

Perhaps, just possibly, Daniel knew about this gift of knowing more than it is usual to know by centering in on God with quietness and trust. Could it be possible?  He came to have inner knowledge of the king's dream, and was not fearful of the king's hearing of it, even although the king was  to be punished by this knowledge. It makes one wonder.......

JESUS CALLING goes on to say this: "Spending time alone with Me can be a  difficult discipline because it goes against the activity addictions of this age.  You may appear to be doing nothing, but you will actually be waging war--not with the weapons of the world but with heavenly weapons which have divine power to demolish strongholds. Living close to Me is a sure defense against evil."

What about this group in the east now which is intent on destruction?  Can we fight them with spiritual warfare by holding them in the Presence of Jesus? Can we fight the murders we read in the newspapers by trusting God to stop the killing? Can we bring all evil shadows on earth and place them within the Presence of Jesus? I think God would be very pleased to have us remember His Son to be the giver of all goodness and to hold in His Divine Presence those who try to destroy His peace and Joy.

What manner of thinking does this old woman bring to you today? Perhaps I am way out of line.
But, what if this is what God is saying to me today!!  See the evil in the world and put it under my umbrella!  I have overcome the world, and can and will destroy this new evil.

We must all do our part. Let's be God's partners and hold evil under Jesus' care with our quietness and trust, with certainty of what God wants.

Again, thanks be to God!

LIFE AS WE KNOW IT

Once there was a fellow named Dan....I have a grandson called Dan.  He was named after the great Daniel of the bible. Daniel's bible story is quite interesting, I think.  His story occurs during the years when God told His people that if they didn't obey Him, they would be captured by the Babylonians and their homes in Judah would be destroyed. Just as God said, Daniel found himself with many others captive in Babylonia.  Daniel never strayed from his faithfulness to God and God gave him the gift of prophesying and being able to understanding the visions of the king, Nebuchadnezzar.

My grandson, Dan, is a great guy.  He has done a fine  job in the last couple of years in trying to overcome a horrific addiction. In spite of situations that were beyond his  control, he is on the mend. We are all very proud of him, and his love for his family and his God will continue to be a gift to the world. What he has overcome has been tragic and yet, he, too, has found a faithfulness to God that will be his forever.

But let's concentrate of why you and I need this gift of faithfulness to God.  Today, our world is full of chaos, hardship, and insecurity.  This is September Eleventh, and even the words bring to mind the horror we all felt in the year 2001. Two planes flew into New York City and crashed into two twin skyscrapers killing hundreds. Those of us alive at that time will never forget the sickening horror and the sorrow that never goes away. So many died. So many families left fatherless or motherless.

Then, too, drunk drivers kill.  Their passengers, those in oncoming cars, too, can die or become injured. Guns are sold to those who intend to use them for harm.  School-children are afraid of strangers, yet those they know may harm them first. Horrible deaths occur from new diseases.  Old-age can bring hardship and Alzheimer's.  Anger is used against children and pets. There is no place to hide from the evils of the world.

Yet, God is here among us to protect us, to help guide us through a tragedy, and sometimes to hold us close while we shed our tears. God is always here.  He is always among us.  He may be in us.

We cannot expect a perfect, unblemished life.  We are here in the world, this world! We can do as Daniel did and trust God through any circumstances we may encounter, even through a tragedy.

We must not expect a perfect life. But we can expect a life perfected by the Spirit of God.

To all those remembering the hurt that came this day so long ago.......

GOD IS HERE.  GOD IS AMONG US!

Thanks be to God!

GREAT IS GOD'S FAITHFULNESS

This morning as I was reading Lamentations 3, verses 19 and 21-23, I was struck by the faithfulness of God.  Those verses say, "I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall.  Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope.  Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.  They are new every morning, "Great is your faithfulness."

The study tells us:  "Jeremiah saw one ray of hope in all the sin and sorrow surrounding him:  Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail." God willingly responds with help when we ask.  (And I add...when we ask and believe, trusting in His guidance.)

It is so easy to become swept up in self-pity,  self-loathing, or self-pride when we carry out our life's days forgetting that God is in charge. Been there; done that, I'm sorry to say.  Although much of my life has passed, I am just now really learning to spend my days under God's direction and am happily adjusting to reminding myself continuously that He is my main Man, not me!

As I go to write this blog, writing down some notes first by pen, I get excited by the whisper of the Lord telling me to check the book "Jesus Calling." For Sept. 10, the book by Sarah Young says, I am always available to you.  Once you have trusted Me as your Savior, I never distance Myself from you.  Sometimes you may feel distant from me.  Recognize that as a feeling; do not confuse it with reality.  No matter what you may lose in this life, you can never lose your relationship with Me."

Young's book is absolute truth, the words of Jesus coming from Is. 54:10. Gen.28:15, and Mat. 28:20.

Christ's presence in our lives fills us with His Spirit each moment.  As we remember Him, He remembers us!  We cannot lose our relationship with the Lord Jesus!

We may deliberately ignore the relationship, sadly enough.  We may forget it for a while, unfortunately, but it cannot become lost.  He will always be there once He has been recognized.  Even forgotten, He is there.  We are His and He is ours.

To whom or what am I faithful?  Not to myself, I hope, as I mess up a lot! No.  I must be faithful to the God who made me, waited and watched for me, blessed me, carried me through high "waters", lifted me over rough "roads", saved me from hating myself and taught me how to love others and myself.

He is always there for me.  He will always be there for You.  He is among us and He is IN us.

Thanks be to God.

TEARS FOR THE WORLD

A few blogs ago I wrote about the prophet Jeremiah.  He wrote another book of the Bible, too,  the book of Lamentations.  His  first book carried his name, Jeremiah, and warned us of the fall of his city and his people.  Lamentations was written after the fall of Jerusalem and captures the sadness that Jeremiah felt at the suffering and destruction of his nation and his people.

The people of Jeremiah's day had been warned many times that their rejection of God would lead to their downfall.  They hated Jeremiah; they thought he was a troublemaker.  They wished he would shut up, that he would die, that he would go someplace else and cry! They did not cry at what Jeremiah had to say; they did not see his tears as he cried for them. He cried because his heart was broken because the people had rejected their God.

Probably, Jeremiah's main purpose of writing Lamentations was to teach people that to disobey God is to invite disaster, and to show that God suffers when His people suffer.  It is hard to understand that the God of the Universe would suffer when we suffer, but the love God has for us is beyond our understanding.  And I believe it is true; God cares for us that much, that He may even cry for us.

Now, I wonder!  What kind of things makes a person cry? If the person is centered on him or herself, he or she might weep because her pride was hurt, or he lost something that was important to him.  If he or she is centered on God, there may be weeping because people sin and reject God, and others will suffer from their sinfulness.

Our  world is filled with war, hate, injustice, poverty, selfishness, and rebellion against God.  Our tears flow at the sight of these things knowing that they must hurt God, as well as those affected by them. This is a fallen world, and many are hurt by its falling. We are all the fallen. How can we who are part of the fallen accept what we have and what we are and become a blessing to one another?

God will weep for us if we do not know or understand. But He will ask us to know what we must do.  We must act out of love for Him and out of desire to keep the people from weeping. Let's not weep for ourselves, at least.  Let's not weep for others, but stand by them.  Be an extra pair of hands.  Be an extra eye to read.  Be an extra leg to stand, or run, or walk.  Be an extra voice to be heard or to pray. Give an extra meal to serve. Be the whisper of God, saying, "Come to Me."

Remembering, "We  are the fallen.  He is the Creator!"

THE FALLEN ANGEL

There is one personage in the Bible who is our enemy.  First, he is God's enemy, but at one time he was one of God's most beloved angels. Isaiah 14:12, "O morning star, son of the dawn!  You have been cast down to earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.  I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High." We know his name as..... Satan.

The Study tells  us: "Some believe these verses mean: He is Satan, because the person here is too powerful to be any human king.  Pride was Satan's sin.  Pride willfully opposes God and will result in judgment. Satan was turned away from heaven and keeps to the earth. Just as Satan has been judged by not entering heaven, Israel made the mistake of being too proud to depend on God and was punished.  We, too, are vulnerable to pride, often making the same mistake, and find ourselves on the "outs" with God until we have confessed the sin of pride to our loving God.

Our weakness to pride is like a magnet drawing the fallen angel to our side.  Satan loves our inability to have humility. It pleases him to separate us from God by encouraging our prideful manners. Whether we instigate pride or the master liar encourages it, pride does "go before a fall" as claimed in the old platitude.

A good friend of ours used to amuse us by saying, "Don't wave at the crowd too early!"  But it kept us from being over-elated sometimes with an accomplishment! This is just one of the many ways to remind us that pride can take us far away from God--very quickly!  God does forgive and will love us even in our pridefulness if we repent and are watchful and stay away from pride and its Ungodly Company.

We must remember always that we belong to God and not His enemy!  God is good, therefore we also are good when God is within us.  Because of God's grace, blessings are ours.  But like the old rooster who had crossed the road, there is no point in crowing over the good job that was done or the blessings received!  That would invite the old fallen angel to have a go at us all over again!

No blowing of horns; no bows or curtsies,

Just plain old

OUR WORLD; OUR TIMES

The Old Testament if filled with the troubles of the world, the world as they knew it.  I wonder what they would write about today, when the troubles of the world are tableaued in the same neck of the woods that it was so many years ago. It hurts my heart to realize that the same peoples are in conflict today as they were so long ago.  And the fight is with swords and knives, yet with terrible weapons available of much more thorough destruction. I'm so sorry. Lord, that we have changed so little.

Ezekial 25:6 reads, "For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet, rejoicing with the malice of your heart against the land of Israel, therefore, I will stretch out my hand against you and give you as plunder to the nations.  I will destroy you, and you will know that I am the Lord."

Do we not choose sides against one or the other of the nations at war?  Every nation will choose for or against another nation.  It is human nature.

The Study tells us:  (The judgment here) "are God's judgments on nations that failed to acknowledge the one true God and fulfill the good purposes God intended for them.   Nations were judged for different things; some because of their joy over the desecration of the temple, some found pleasure in the wickedness of other nations, some because of their racial hatred."

In today's world, we as Christians, must be careful to heed God's judgments made so long ago in a different, but similar time.  We begin by not understanding the choice other nations may have to hate us, yet our nation is wealthy by comparison and far healthier.  Secondly, we hate the choices other nations may make in their rebellion against or aggression toward other nations and people.  We hate their pleasure at another nations difficulties and discomfort.  And all of us suffer from racial hatred as it affects a response of some kind, good or bad, from each individual who sees or hears it. Yet, these are the very things which God judged so long ago.

Do we show anger, fear, sarcasm, or delight when other nations fail to find peace with each other?  Or do we rejoice to see two nations reunite? Do we hate racial hatred? If not, we need to seriously pray for  the generosity of ourselves and other nations to allow ourselves to  rejoice in peace. We need to pray for each nation to find some joy in their circumstances that they may be proud people themselves and not yearning to be like some other nation or people.

Yes, we need to pray.  Pray for other nations, especially for our enemies, that God will be their guide.  And for our own nation, that we will once again be a nation of God!  The world needs God's blessings, but we must learn to recognize those blessings and be truly thankful for them.

We also need to remember always to forgive.  Forgiveness is so often forgotten, and when forgiveness is forgotten, grudges develop and the years go on in disharmony, or possibly, war.
We don't let our family suffer long over some incident which riled someone, nor should we let incidents between nations go long without forgiveness, either.

God's judgment will be felt by all unless we forgive, forget about retaliation, hope in and trust God, and pray.

Today is the first day of the rest of our lives, let us rejoice in it....

CHRIST WILL RETURN---SOMEDAY!

At my advanced age, I doubt that I will live to see the wonderful day when Christ returns to this earth.  I imagine I will have to watch His entrance from some point in Heaven, maybe a special look- out spot where I will watch the many who await Him below. What a grand day that will be!

The Bible tells us just a little, just enough to get us really interested, in the way Christ will return.  For instance, in Mark 13:32 and 33 it says, "No one knows about the day or the hour, not even the angels in Heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.  Be on guard!  Be alert!"  (and verse 35) "Therefore, keep watch!"

We have witnessed many ways that Jesus comes to us in the world. I think of an old picture from Sunday School with Jesus in a yellow robe knocking on a blue door, the door of our heart, I like to think.  Jesus comes in a smile from a friend who tells me," Christ loves you!"  The story of Jesus birth at Christmastime tells us, truly, the way He came.  The signs of the cross tells us "why" He came, to rid  us of our shame and sin.

I apologize for not having a reference for this next statement, but there is a passage somewhere in the Bible, I think, that tells us that Jesus will come in the clouds. I have watched the clouds for a good part of my life, hoping I would see Christ return!  I can't say that I am consumed by the idea, but with the knowledge that it could have happened in my life-time, cloud watching was always followed by a prayer. How He will come, I do not really know, but He will come to take us home with Him.

The study in my bible says several things: "From Revelation 9:10, "God has revealed all we need to know to live for Him now.  In our desire to be ready for the end, we must not place more emphasis on speculation about the last days than on living for God while we wait." And in the Study for Mark 13:32-33, "It is the Father's secret to be revealed when He wills.  No one can predict by Scripture or science the exact day of Jesus' return.  Jesus taught that preparation, not calculation is needed..  The way to prepare is to study God's word and live by its instructions each day.  Only then will we be ready."

We will probably never learn the entirety of need for preparation for His return.  But, continued prayer and listening to God's Holy Spirit will be our best source for peace while we await His return, maybe in our day, maybe not.

Again from the study, and I choose this as my last words to you, "We  must do our best to stimulate our surroundings with right living for God in a world where He is largely ignored."

God, bless the world and its beings, including those who may read these words.  Help them to watch for you!  And bless me, I pray, for life in You in this and other days.

To all who await His return!

TODAY IS A NEW DAY

Yesterday I mentioned that today would be our 60yr. wedding anniversary.  That doesn't change the fact that today is still a new day, another day to accept the Lord and His precepts, another new day to show the Lord God that we love Him, another day to reach out to our neighbor and show him or her Christ's love.  In fact, maybe we need God's restoration because we have not fulfilled that which we desired to do. So let's continue with that in mind.

Jesus can restore us, always.  He doesn't scold, nor does He humiliate. He doesn't tell us to try harder. With Jesus, there is no shaming.  All He asks is for us to tell Him, once again, that we love Him.

Remember how Peter failed Jesus the night Jesus was arrested? He  denied that he knew Jesus three times!  Peter hated himself for what he had done, but could not undo it.  All Jesus said to him is, "Peter do you love me?" If you answer like Peter did, you will say, "Yes, Lord I do love you!" And Jesus will remind you of what it says in John 14:15, "If you truly love me, you will obey me."

Through prayer and listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit, we will truly have the love for Him that Jesus desires, and we will serve Him in the way He asks, through our obedience and faithfulness.

We cannot resolve to love God and obey Him; we simply must show love  and be obedient.

Loving God more than we love anything else, you and I are going to make it through the days and the tomorrows!

I am on my knees for you and for me,

THE SOURCE OF WISDOM

Another day in my life; another joy.  Thank you, Lord, for letting me "stick to the guy who "brung" me" to this dance of life called marriage. Sixty years tomorrow we'll have been married.  I thank God for Jerry, and for God guiding us to each other.  Amazing, huh?

In reading Psalm 111 today, verse 10 spoke to me: "The  fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding.  To Him belongs eternal praise." Immediately following the psalm, was the study for it, and that tells us: "The only way to become truly wise is to fear (revere) God.  Too often people want to skip this step, thinking they can become wise by life experience and academic knowledge alone.  But if we do not acknowledge God as the source of wisdom, then our foundation for making wise decisions is shaky, and we are prone to make mistakes and foolish choices."

I try to make wise choices, and the best way I know to choose wisdom is to first pray before I say!  I believe the Holy Spirit will guide me when I ask it of Him, and so I try to always remember to ask.

Yesterday our small group was here and one of our members expressed the hurt that her daughter's family was going through as they were being badgered by the neighbor who will eventually live next door.  No one knew what to do as the man was complaining that the people were going at the new house all wrong and his own property was being affected. His actions had been way out of control as he was getting a lawyer involved, etc. The daughter's family life was being affected and there was a fear of having this man living next door even if all went OK in the building of the house.

What could  we do for this family?  After a bit of discussion, we all agreed that this must be a time to pray.  But we decided, realizing it to be the wisest thing to do, was to pray for the indignant man!  Those around him may suffer a bit, but they did not need the change of mind.  But the indignant man did need a mind-change, an attitude change, a heart change.  And only God can do that.  So we prayed together.  And we will continue to  pray for this man to know the fear of the Lord and find the beginning of true wisdom--- for this man, as of now,  has a fearful purpose.

We all want to live without fear, for it is not good to live in fear.  But the fear of the Lord means to respect and revere Him for He is our Almighty Lord.  When we trust God completely to take care of us, our other fears, even of death, will subside!

Time to praise God for the beginning of our wisdom, this small kernel of faith and understanding which has begun.  Praise and thank you, Lord, for your everlasting gifts!

Yours by and in faith,

Jo of MN
