Luke 3:12 tells us, "Even the tax collectors that came to John to be baptized asked him, "Teacher, what shall we do?"
John had gone throughout the region around the Jordan river proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin. All who came to John asked him specifically what they should do, even though he had told them they must repent and turn from their sinful ways. John gave them examples: share your material goods, do not lie or cheat one another.
As humans we want to have specific directions, defined ideas of what should be done. Later, when Jesus came, he would say, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me." It sounds easier to give someone your coat, or be careful not to lie or cheat, than it would be to "take up your cross."
The main thrust is that if I am to be Jesus disciple, I must deny myself by taking myself out of the center of my concern and putting concern for others at the center. Jesus came to model a servant heart, giving His very life for me and for all. If I give my life to Jesus, I am carrying my cross.
Lord Jesus, I lay at your feet my desire, my demand, for my own needs first. Amen.
