In Numbers 11:14, because the Israelites were complaining because they had no meat, "Moses said to the Lord, 'I am not able to carry this people alone, for they are too heavy for me. If this is the way you are to treat me, put me to death at once.'"
From the very beginning when the Lord called Moses, Moses wanted to decline and told the Lord, "Not me! I can't do it! Send someone else." All along the way in the wilderness, Moses met opposition from the people he was sent to help out of Egyptian slavery. They complained and criticized. Finally Moses said, "I can't take it anymore; let me die. This is too hard."
Oftentimes, we see that God uses the least likely person for His purposes. As humans we are inclined to withdraw and tell God, "I can't; I have no skill in this area. It's too hard for me!"
When we might be ready to give up and quit, we can know from God's Word that God is there beside us and will never leave us. In Psalm 27:1, it says, "The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear?" That is when we must turn to God, for when the going gets tough, the tough grab the Lord's hand and together get it done.
Lord God, keep us from giving up when we want to proclaim, "Too hard!" Take our hands and walk with us, whatever you may call us to do, separately or together. Amen.

WHAT DEFILES?
In Mark 7:13, "Jesus said, "There is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out defile."
"Jesus tells the Israelites exactly the opposite of what they had always been taught. God, in speaking to Moses, as seen in the Old Testament, proclaimed certain things were not to be eaten so as not to defile that person. Jesus, in the New Testament, changes that to explain that it's what comes out of the heart that defiles--envy, jealousy, anger, gossip, etc---separating us from God. The early hygiene requirements are now changed to describe that it is our actions and attitudes that bring witness against us, not what we eat or drink.
Jesus said, "What's in your heart? Do you show love, kindness, mercy, gentleness, and self control?" We must force ourselves to look at our actions to see if they reflect the love of Christ. If not, that is what defiles us. I admit, I do not always show that which Jesus asks of me; and I suspect Jesus knows it, too. Perhaps, I need to slow down my reactions to others so that I can use self-control, show more kindness and gentleness, as well as trust that the other person has no unkind intentions. If not, my actions will defile me.
This is a tall order for me, and I admit that I am still battling against my lack of self-control. Won't you pray for me along with your prayers for yourself and others? "Lord, help me to have a pure heart with others by first seeking after you. Amen." (And thank you, readers!)

CHRISTIAN CONTAGION
In Numbers 19:22 it tells us, "When you are unclean, everything you touch becomes unclean, and anyone who touches you will be unclean."
The Book of Numbers carries some pretty tough laws, and in the one above it even suggests that one's state of purity will affect another's state of purity if one is touched. But today, touched doesn't necessarily have to mean, "My hand touching yours." I think it can also refer to one's attitude, and there I find it to be absolutely true as one's attitude can and often does affect the mind of another.
Negativity quickly spreads one to another. But so does cheerfulness. What do you do when someone smiles at you? Probably, you smile right back. It's almost impossible not to! We may often choose not to be around someone who habitually uses negative thinking. It may have its place on occasion, but not about everything!
It is important to protect ourselves with prayer when we encounter negativity. First , to be open to another view but. secondly, to be a champion for positive thought. Pray that God will be with us with His love and respect that we might share that love and respect to those we encounter. Prayerfully thank God for the New Testament which carries the newer truth and understands the nature of God Himself. And thank Him for the Old which gives us God's history.
God, you know the truth and you are Truth. May we always show others our love and respect for you and for your Truth. Amen

WHAT'S IN A NAME?
In Psalm 29:2 it tells us to "Honor the wonderful name of the Lord."
Some time ago, our grandson asked a surprising question, "What's all the fuss about Jesus' name? People say, "In the name of the Lord, " and I don't get it?'
The question he asked popped into my mind when I read the verse from the Psalms. I couldn't answer his question right away, as I don't always think so well when I need to. Now I might say, "If Barack Obama walked into the room, we would all stand and say, "Mr. President!" We don't necessarily honor the name Barack Obama. Nor do we honor him because we voted for him, or
because we agree with his decisions. In spite of how we feel about Barack Obama, we honor the position and the title of that position, "Mr. President."
So it is with God. In the least, we honor the position and by doing so, we honor the name of God, by whatever name we call God. As Christians, we honor Christ and his name, Jesus. In fact, we honor Christ by honoring His name. As we come to love God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, honoring God's name becomes very natural.
Lord, We pray this will be so for our children and grandchildren in their lifetimes. Amen.

WITHOUT HONOR FROM HIS OWN
Mark 3:21 reads, "When the family of Jesus heard that the Jewish leaders were saying, "He has gone out of his mind," they went to try to convince Him to come home and stop what He was doing, for they were concerned for his safety and sanity."
It has been said by Jesus and repeated by others that a prophet is without honor in his own family or country. Jesus was so far beyond what they could have understood that even Mary, his mother, who had been foretold of what her son, Jesus, was to become, couldn't grasp it. As any mother would do, she wanted to protect her child from abuse and harm, even though now he was a grown man. His brothers and sisters, no doubt, heard ridicule and abuse about him and felt embarrassed. "Let's go get him and make him come home!" they may have agreed.
When things happen that we humans can't understand, we scoff and ridicule. Yet as Christians, we are called to have faith and follow, giving praise, glory and honor, even when it seems unfathomable. Perhaps, it should tell us that it is time to check our list of "What is a Christian Believer?" Check it and change; get it up to date!
Lord, help us to never dishonor the Name of Jesus, but to lift it up to all we encounter. Amen.

NOTHING IS QUITE LIKE THIS
In mark 2:12b, we read, "They praised God and said, "We have never seen anything like this!"
Those who watched the miracle of a man picking up his mat and walking had never seen anything like it! It was a wonder, a miracle, one of those things where one would say, "How can this be?"
Ever watch a magician? Watched and wondered, "How did he do that?" "How can this be?" I have, and I bet you have, too. I've felt the wonder of seeing my first child right after her birth, and saying, "This is a wonder; too wonderful to be possible; she is my own miracle and I am holding her in my arms." I saw the joy of my own mother's love as she looked into my face just before she died; I had to wonder at so much love and knew it to always have been there for me.
But most of all I know the wonder of God's love when once again the world begins to think of Holy Week and I think, "Why would Christ die for us?" Yet I knew I would die for my own .
We have a way to go for Holy Week this year, but it's good to think of the wonder of God's love even with Holy Week a month of away. "Why would God die for us?" Why would we die for our own?
Love is wonderful. God's love is too wonderful, beyond measure. Have you known anything like this? "How can this be?"
God, may those who enter into your Presence or in the presence of Your Holy Spirit at any time or in any way, may they encounter You and praise You, and say, "I have never seen anything like this!" AMEN

GOD WANTS TO SAVE US!
In Acts 24 and 28 there are two lines that can use our attention...."Some were convinced by what Paul said, while others refused to believe".....Paul said, "You may be sure that God wants to save the Gentiles. And they will listen!" (Gentiles, of course , were the non- Jewish people. In other words, me and maybe, you!)
Paul said this to the Jewish leaders in Rome, frustrated that his beloved Jewish people refused to listen. Well, as with any area of life today,, some will hear and believe while others will not believe, no matter how powerful the proof. Skeptics are always with us--there is no escaping them--perhaps you, too, are one of them!
My husband's initial reaction to hearing some new information was to be skeptical himself--it'll never work... I don't understand..... it's never been done before. He admits it; but he's grown out of it, honest!
Long ago, the Jews were the skeptics and the Gentiles listened. Even though the Jews were God's chosen people, God wanted the Gentiles to be saved, too. So, they listened.
Today, some Christians believe they are the chosen people. We all must be careful of this for this is self-righteousness. Each of us must be careful of thinking we are special in some way from others. The only difference is we have heard the Good News where some have not. Some of us are going to need a good remodeling, if we think we are better than any other. We must each be open to being remade, or at least to making some adjustments. We must participate in whatever God needs us to change. If no one is listening, God may choose to find people somewhere that will participate.
And remember, even God can't open a hardened heart!
God, your Gentile nation has begun to be self-satisfied. Please forgive your people in all nations, and we earnestly pray for our remodeling, no matter where or on whom it must take affect. Amen.

FROM CURIOSITY TO DENIAL
In Acts 25:22, Agrippa says, "I'd like to see this man and hear his story."
"Herod Agrippa, like the Herod before him, was curious. "I'd like to know more about this strange thing that this man has succumbed to." "What does this guy see in Jesus?" "What is it about these Christians?" Familiar questions asked by many people even today, yes? Why would any person choose to live by a bunch of ideas shared by some character that lived a long time ago? And they claim this guy will rule the earth?
"What did Agrippa expect to see in Paul that could have convinced him that Paul had a way of life with peace and security that Agrippa would never know? Like his father, Herod Agrippa expected to see a miracle, perhaps. A miracle might have convinced Herod to give up his wealth and power and follow, but it is doubtful. So, he saw no miracle, he saw just an ordinary man who believed in an extra-ordinary God-man. Yes, Paul must be crazy.
"Denial sets in; refusal to believe the extra-ordinary, unfortunately, is what most people decide to do. It is only the God-led habitually, those determined to follow God no matter how difficult, who decide God's way is the way. Once chosen, it is a matter, once again, that each of us continue to choose God's way, each and every day, whatever that day may bring. We are people who must will ourselves to choose the will of God."
And so we listen and watch for God's leading. God, may people see You in us. May they see the extra-ordinary that only You give. May others see in us that which they want so much that it exceeds their temptation to disbelieve. Amen.
Onward and Upward!

GOD MAY MAKE US SQUIRM!
In Acts 24:25,26, Paul continues speak to the governor, Felix, insisting "men must have right relations with God and his people and a life of moral discipline," and "the coming judgment". Felix felt he had heard enough, that things were getting a little to close for comfort, and he dismissed Paul, saying, "That's enough for today. I'll call you back when it's convenient."
Felix got kind of squirmy, didn't he? That's what happens to us when we draw close to God; we become uncomfortable with ourselves because of our sinful nature. God makes us squirm! But by accepting Jesus' grace and forgiveness we can sit still again and listen, accepting the love and grace we are offered. If we're continue to squirm or excuse ourselves, we're not ready to accept Christ and all he offers. This means we must pray again for God to ready us and for ourselves to accept all that Jesus has to give us.
God, Help us to keep in mind that people don't always "feel" ready to accept Jesus due to the "squirming" that goes on within us. Help us all to see our "squirming" as a part of the process of acceptance of who we are. And when we do start to squirm, Lord, let us see it as our own reluctance to accept that which is difficult to hear. Amen.
My friends, you and I are human and imperfect. Only through the grace of our Lord shall we ever become perfected. But, we are forgiven!

KEEP UP YOUR COURAGE
In Acts 23:11, we read, "That night, the Lord stood near Paul and said, "Keep up your courage!...For you must also bear witness for me in Rome." Paul had been flogged, beaten, shipwrecked, and imprisoned in serving the Lord. And now he finds himself on the way to Jerusalem where he is facing a death threat by the Jews there. Then, God comes in and speaks to Paul saying, "Keep up your courage! I have more for you to do! I'm sending you to Rome!" It must have felt to Paul to be more than he could handle!
"Now, Rome was the capital of evil; it was not a place where life would be made easy for a Christian apostle. Paul had no way of knowing that he would be imprisoned again for a long time before he would ever get to Rome. And all that time,, Paul witnessed to others in order to justify God's plan for him, the witness that we read about in Acts, still today.
When we feel tired and out of gas, God will come to us when we ask and says, "Be courageous, my love, for I have more plans for you." We know God has said, "I will never leave you, nor forsake you." God knows what He has planned for each of us, even if we do not ourselves know. We must acknowledge, that even when we can't see how God is working, God is right there beside each of us, encouraging us, and cheering each of us on.
Lord God, we thank you that we can hear you say, "Never give up; keep your courage." Amen.
May the words of my mouth and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in His sight!

NOT MINE, BUT GOD'S
Leviticus 25:23 tells us, "The land shall not be sold in perpetuity for the land is mine; with me you are but aliens and tenants." The Lord makes clear to us in Leviticus that his people are to always remember that all we have is given as gifts and responsibilities to us, not forever but for a limited time. The New Testament has the same idea in the statement, "What do I have that I did not receive as a gift? And if a gift, how could I feel boastful?"
"As humans we are given a limited time on this earth by God's standard, and for some reason work hard to pile up treasures here. Yet not one of us can take anything with us when we leave this earth! Whenever we begin to feel prideful or self-satisfied, we must remind ourselves of the transitory nature of life on earth. We are given as a gift and trust to use God's land and his goods upon and in the land for His glory, not our own.
"Lord God, May we never forget whose we are and whom we serve, and that we own nothing in perpetuity. Amen."
These words are still useful for us today, although written as a young, upcoming man years ago...Jerry, my husband. I pray today that you may find them useful. We may work hard to have what we have, but it is always good to remember from whom and why they have been given.
Much love,

PS.24:4 DO RIGHT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS
In Acts 21:4, "The Holy Spirit had told them to warn Paul not to go to Jerusalem." Paul's reaction to the spirit's warning in Acts is such a puzzle. After being warned he seems to say, "Yeah, but..." Did he have his own agenda? Or did he only take it as a warning that there could be trouble in Jerusalem and He'd better be ready? If the latter, he is a model of courage in the Christian world. Most assume this is so. But could he have had the wrong motive? He so much wanted to persuade his Jewish "brothers" that his work for God was of value.
It's a puzzle. The psalm tells us to do right, but be careful of our motive. Paul was human, even if he was one of the best. But our motives--human motives--have to be watched carefully. They are sneaky! So often we will have selfish motives, perhaps like wanting to take credit for the result of some work. Paul found trouble at the beginning of his imprisonment in Jerusalem when he did not heed the Holy Sprit's warning. What might be our Jerusalem?
God, Whatever I may do in your Name may well be contaminated with some personal, selfish motive. I desire a pure heart, but I know there are vestiges of impurities in me, no matter how much I desire otherwise. I beg your forgiveness and desire your help in being tolerant of my own nature and the human failings of others, as well. Thank You. Amen.
Dear Reader, If it is your desire to join me in this prayer, please do.

CONFUSED? GO THE RIGHT WAY
In Acts 19:32, we read, "Some of the people in the meeting were shouting one thing and others were shouting something else. Everyone was completely confused and most of them did not even know why they were there!"
This sounds familiar! Have you been there? This sounds very much like what I imagine Iraq and the middle East to sound like today! It could even be our own country during pre-elections.
Governments can cause confusion to the populace at most any time, wherever the people may live. Even troops used in the area of war must wonder about their own situations and how it relates to themselves. And think of our own nation in troubled chaos by our racial biases and discourtesies! Yet we somehow survive, often putting off what could be done or said today. How do we survive!
How indeed, friends? How indeed, God? How do we survive the chaos? We could not...without you, God.... to lead us through our chaos. We need you, God...... desperately!
God, we pray for your strength and purpose that we might diligently pursue the course set for us, being ever mindful as to when and where you want us to change course, or when you want us to accept the course we are on. Give us wisdom and discernment, God,, for the days...and years...ahead. And for the peoples that are offended or the countries affected, Lord, give them patience and hope. Show us the right way, Lord...the right way. Amen.

BURNING ENTHUSIASM
Acts 18:24-28 tells us, "A Jew named Apollos came to Ephesus from Alexandria. He spoke with eloquence..with burning enthusiasm and power, showing the Jews by the scriptures (of the Old Testament) that the Messiah is Jesus."
"When Jesus by the Holy Spirit calls people to Himself they cannot help but speak with burning enthusiasm about what they've seen and heard. The early apostles and disciples who followed Him were no longer frightened or fearful as they witnessed for Him after meeting the risen Christ.
"When Jesus came into my heart and changed me (Jo's husband, Jerry), there was no way I could speak of Him except by burning enthusiasm. And it is still the same today. I cannot wait to share what I've seen and heard with those I meet. (But he no longer wants to use a megaphone!)
Lord, we all thank you for instilling into your believers this burning enthusiasm to tell the world who you are. May we do this through your love and within your plan. Amen.

NOT A PEEK-A-BOO GOD!
In Acts 17:29 and a bit more, Paul, in Athens, explained to the people in the open square that the Unknown God is near enough to be known, and he says, "God doesn't play hide and seek with us. God's not remote; God is near! We live and move in God; we can't get away from God! One of your poets said it well, "We're the God-created." Well, if we are the God-created, it doesn't make a lot of sense to think we would hire a sculptor to chisel a god out of stone for us, does it?"
"I couldn't resist using the passionate words of Paul and had to use them. "We are God-created!" No stone sculptor for our God, but a human who walked, talked and suffered more in his three years of ministry than most of us will ever have to suffer in a life-time.
"No, God didn't or doesn't play hide and seek. God is as near to us now as lifting our hands in praise or bowing our heads in prayer. God is in us through the power of the Holy Spirit, by the grace of Christ Jesus' death on the cross and His resurrection into life everlasting."
Although the above words were used long ago in my first journal, I still praise God for this miracle in my life, and if you feel the same way, I am very glad, and I thank our God for His presence and for this miracle in our lives, both yours and mine.

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?
Just in case there are readers who are just beginning to read this blog, I want to ask this question once again---What must I do to be saved? This question was first asked in Acts 16:30, 31 when a jailer asked it of Paul and Silas. They answered "Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household."
As Paul, Silas, Timothy, Luke and others traveled about the Mediterranean world, people wanted what they had, the gift of the Holy Spirit of God and assurance of the forgiveness of sin. The apostles told them the simplicity of conversion was a matter of yielding of each human's will to put Christ first above all else and to believe Christ is who he says He is..the Son of God.
This same question exists today. People wonder how some can be set free of the burden of fear, jealousy, greed, malice, etc. As Christians, we must tell them that Jesus is the way--the One and only Way. If we don't believe this,we should not call ourselves Christian, but non-believers in Christ's divinity.
Lord,we thank you for the simplicity of salvation for us humans. It costs us so little because it cost you so much. Amen.
May there be many who read and many to come to know our Lord.

GRACE TO LISTEN; HUMILITY TO OBEY
In Leviticus 7:1,6 it tells us, "The sacrifice to make things right is very sacred...very holy."
I'm one of those people who is not at rest until whatever has gone wrong is made right. Are you like that, too? If there's a to-do with someone about something, I have to make it right. Sometimes I can't. Perhaps, the other person isn't ready to meet me part way so we can forgive each other. It saddens me to have a relationship broken, for any reason.
This verse, however, suggests....( I say suggests, but it was an order in Old Testament times.)....there needs to be a sacrifice before things can be made right. It also suggests this action is very holy and sacred.
But what kind of sacrifice does God look for today? A fast? A good deed? If I want to make things right with another person, I must go to that person and humbly accept my role in the break in our relationship...and expect nothing! In a break of my relationship with God, I would fast and then pray.
I have no helpful story of the past in making things right. I have nothing to crow about! There are many situations in the past where I might have used this advice. But, oftentimes I did not. I have a huge pride that wants the other fellow to see his part in the wrong, and waiting for an apology has never helped my situation. How about you, my friend?
God expects me to be smarter and more able to put into good use those things the Bible spells out for us. Yes, it is a sacrifice to admit we are wrong; it is a sacrifice of our own pride! But what a good thing to sacrifice! Let's stop and think about what it is that holds us back from an apology. Yep! Pride! So, even if the other guy doesn't want to bend at all! We must; for our own souls, we must sacrifice and make things right in order to keep our world sacred and holy.
At every impasse, Lord, point us in the right direction, please! And remind us to keep our lives sacred and holy by offering a needed apology. Amen.

GOOD BEFORE GOD
In Acts 13, verse 39, it tells us, "Everyone who believes in this "raised-up Jesus" is declared good and right and whole before God."
Believe it! In verses following the above, Paul stresses, "Don't take it lightly!" For it had been prophesied that taken lightly we would become cynical and we would watch our world fall to pieces.
The Word of God speaks for our world today as well as the world when He first spoke. God is for all times, so it behooves us to listen carefully to what He said then as well as what He may now say to you or me.
Never again can I let myself believe--even for a moment--that I am not good and righteous before God! I may act impetuously and imperfectly sometimes, in spite of my desire to be pleasing to God in all ways, but Christ died for my sins--past sins, present sins and future sins--so I am good and righteous, and whole before God because I believe and follow this "raised-up Jesus" and love Him and His people and try to love all He brings into my path just as he loves me. God sees me through the prism of Jesus, therefore through Jesus, I become perfect in God's eyes. WOW!
Lord God, We all thank you for your grace and love. May we each know and love and trust your Holy Spirit to let us know that love is always kind, just, and generous. Amen.

NOW I AM SURE!
Acts 12:11 tells us that Peter had escaped from prison and found himself among friends. "Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I am sure that the Lord has sent His angel and rescued me..."
"This was the time in Peter's life when he was able to say, "Now I am sure!" He knew that only the power of God could have freed him from prison where Herod had him completely in chains surrounded by guards. Peter had already come to know that Jesus was the Messiah, but now He'd had this personal experience of liberation.
"Christians today have this same feeling when we have been set free from the bonds and chains that hold us down, whether those bonds are physical, mental or spiritual. When we are set free, we can't help but exclaim boldly, "Now I am sure, Jesus is the One !" If there ever was a minor doubt, there no longer is!
To this day, I am troubled by a quick temper when it is implied that I need correction. At that moment, I need to visualize Jesus and turn around in my spirit and take hold of the Holy Spirit who understands and corrects me. At first, my pride tries to stop me. But, finally, I do ask for help and it is received. I always find Jesus there waiting for me to recognize my need for Him.
I have witnessed many miracles of change by the hand of God in my own life and in the lives of friends and family. So, Lord we come to you with our hands outstretched for your goodness. And we thank you for the gifts given so that we can each proclaim, "Now I am sure!"
You who is always there, take our hands!

DON'T HINDER GOD
In Acts 11:17,18, Peter says to the Jewish believers, "If then God gave the Gentiles the same gift that He gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I should hinder God?" And they answered, "Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life."
Many times Jesus had told His disciples that He was sent to the Jews to bring the gift of redemption and salvation. Yet later, Peter was told by God not to make any distinction between the Jews and the Gentiles. As Peter then, and as we today must recognize, God calls all people to Himself. When we look at one another in derision and think, "He is so far gone that there can be no hope for him," God simply says, "Don't hinder me!" What God makes clean, we must not call profane!
When Jesus calls us to discipleship, He rules no one out for you or me to share the Good News with, no matter how he or she might appear to our human eyes. That man, that woman is perfect in Christ Jesus. If we don't see them in this way, we are guilty of hindering God.
Lord Jesus, Be with your people that we might see people as you see them and as you saw each of us--in need of your saving grace. Keep us from ever hindering your work in the life of another human soul. Amen.
To you, my friends, I pray nothing I might ever write would hinder you from receiving the loving grace that Christ offers to each of us, and that you will each perceive His grace given already to you and me, your loving friend.

JO TO CONTROL! COME IN PLEASE!
In Acts 10:44, "While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit took control of everyone who was listening."
Peter was called through a dream to Cornelius's house. "Cornelius was a Roman, but he was a believer in Jesus, prayed, and worshiped God. Poor Peter, having traveled some distance to Cornelius, probably was still somewhat confused about why he was visiting a Gentile. After all, Peter thought, God in Jesus belonged to the Jews! So the Holy Spirit took complete control."
"Listen, everyone! Speak in tongues! I give you another language! I am the Lord's Spirit here to acclaim Jesus Christ and all of His teachings to you. Learn from me! I am the power given by God to you, to teach you to praise, to serve, and to show honor to our loving and Holy God!"
"Wow! What a gift God has given us, the Gentiles of the world. What a Holy honor! What a wonder to be adopted into the family of God through the power of the Holy Spirit!"
Now---How does the Holy Spirit manifest Himself in your life, Jo? And in yours, dear friend?
God, you have set our minds and hearts on fire with your love. You have graced us with hearts that love others; when we least expect it you fill us with accepting love. I pray this gift of loving will never be removed from our grasps. We claim it as our most precious gift from you and offer ourselves, with this love, to be used however and whenever You choose! Amen.
And you, dear reader, I give my heart to you for you have read what has the most meaning for me in my life and I take a great assumption by assuming that you, too, have found these precious gifts given by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

A FRIEND TO GOD
In the book of Exodus chapter 33, verses 7 and 11, (and later verse 29) we read "Moses used to set up a tent far from camp. He called it the "meeting tent," and whoever needed some message from the Lord would go there. Each time Moses went out to the tent, everyone would stand at the entrance to his own tent and watch Moses enter. Then the people would bow down because a thick cloud would come down in front of the Meeting Tent, and the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, just like a friend." These words are only a small part of the great Exodus story of the Jewish people, God's own, who wanted to return to their homeland after suffering years of slavery in Egypt.
This verse is pleasant to think about. Here is Moses at God's own doorway, some distance away from the noisy camp. The doorway is open, yet He stands aside, ready to inform the people of what is important for them to hear. The people stand outside their own doorways and watch Moses go to the "Meeting Tent." Perhaps they strain to hear what God may be saying to Moses. What might they be thinking? Will Moses hear from God tonight? Have we pleased God today? Perhaps they might be wondering what it would be like to see God's face. Did they wonder if they could ever be a friend to God as Moses was?
We might wonder, too. What would it take to be a friend to God?
Father in Heaven, thank you for this wonderful scene with your people wondering what it would take to be your friend. Moses obeyed you and was your friend. Father, we are your people now and want to obey. Verse 29 of this same scripture tells us that Moses' face was shining after coming away from You. May my face and the faces of all those I love shine with your love so that all those we meet will know of your glory. Amen.

A HOUSE FOR GOD
In Acts 7:48-50 it says, "The Most High God doesn't live in houses made by humans. It is just as the prophet said when he spoke for the Lord, "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. what kind of house will you build for me? In what place will I rest? I have made everything."
This seems to tell us that we don't need churches! Maybe for some this may be true. But, for Jerry and me, it was terribly important. Jerry was frustrated with his church before we met and had stopped attending. I was hungry for a church as my family had stopped attending because too many residential moves and job changes over the years had finally found us church-less. I was hungry for church and its teachings and Jerry unsatisfied with church teachings that had no biblical basis. so, we started out church-less, but loving God.
Being churchless meant no habits-formed, no encouragement to read the Bible, no encouragement to pray, no reminder that God is a Holy God, etc. It is harder to stay in the presence of Jesus when you get used to your own person sitting on the "throne" of personal decision-making and right-thinking!
So, we found a church, staying away from the type of churches we had been associated with earlier. Our hearts had been led to find God, and we found him by actively being part of the church's teachings and works. Over the years, the Church, not necessarily one particular kind of church, led us where we were meant to be. Christ in us, blessing us as His Own, we attend church gladly to share our joy with others and celebrate Christ 's life and death, for He has given us all we have.
And what we have been given are the building blocks for God's house. We are learning to have a boldness for God, a willingness to serve, a hunger to learn, being humble enough to admit our needs and wrongs, honest enough to be sincere in our love, forgiving when wronged, trusting when we pray, praying hard, caring when others hurt, being enthusiastic about worship, worshipping whole-heartedly, being sacrificial to God and others, being kind to strangers, thinking of others first, and centering on God through our daily routines. These are the building blocks needed for God's "house."
Lord, may we be reminded that You are with us wherever we are and that your "house" is open for others to enter. And give us courage to enter the bigger "house" where all can meet, together. AMEN
