Amos 6:8 tells us,, "The Lord God has said, "I abhor the pride of Jacob (Israel).""
The primary thing that God hates and has spoken of throughout the ages is the sin of pride. God hates human pride! It takes God out of the place of centrality and places the human heart, full of ego, at the center. Pride says, "Look at what a good job I've done. Look how successful I am, and what power I have." The scripture again and again stresses the importance of having a humble heart that acknowledges... "Apart from God, "I am a lost, unholy nothing.""
Whenever I begin to "wave at the crowd," God shows me quickly that I'm not in control--He is! Very quickly the rug is pulled from under my feet and I fall flat on my behind--just where God wants me to be. God quickly gets my attention when I feel proud.
Sometimes it reverses. Pride will not let me admit that I have ordinary faults that need attention, and I feel hurt if someone points a fault out to me. God doesn't like that either, and I have to go to Him in shame, asking to be forgiven. Then, I can face the fault and try to improve my actions, with His help.
Either way, pride is my enemy, for the Love of God is my prime asset, and the reason I am on this earth. Pride will destroy that love, for God hates pride. Pride is the enemy of all; God, our friend. I am a friend of God.

ALL FOR A SMILE
Ps. 80:19, from THE MESSAGE, says, "God of the Angel Armies, come back! Smile your blessing smile! That will be our salvation."
I love the picture this verse from Psalm 80, a psalm of salvation, sends! First, God of the Angel Armies. Just imagine! Thousands upon thousands of angels, not too different from us, perhaps, white-robed and winged, all in row upon row surrounding God. God has a brilliant glow, whiter than the white we know about, and lit like the sun without the sun's terrible heat, but is lovingly warm.
God is smiling. That is, I think He must be smiling. Our hearts are beating fast, but still we have a great peace within. We just know God is smiling!
You, God, your plan, your love, your restoration of the world--these will be our salvation. And you brought those things to us in the form of Jesus Christ over 2,000 years ago! Blessed be your name, our God of the Angel Armies. I pray you will not be disappointed with me, and that what I say and what I do will always cause you to smile. Amen.

PERSECUTION
Today's reading: "All who want to live a Godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted." (2 Tim. 3:12)
Paul writes to his young fellow-servant and believer, Timothy, that all who follow Jesus will be persecuted. Why would this be the case?
The scriptures remind us many times that if we are identified with Jesus, just as the world persecuted Him, they will persecute us. How could we expect anything to be different? The powers of Satan in the world don't want people to be told they are going down the wrong path, so power is let loose to persecute Christians. The worldly will love and seek after money. They may become boasters, arrogant, abusive, disobedient, ungrateful, unholy, inhuman slanderers, haters, haters of good, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. (2 Tim. 3:2)
Without God, one act encourages another, and often, acts spiral down to more abusive acts than before as that is the way evil seems to work. Only God can stop the spiraling affect by forgiving a repentant spirit.
If my faith and yours shine the light of Christ on those who follow the darkness of Satan, we can be sure there will be a retaliation to try to destroy us. When evil acts persist, so is the work of Satan persisting.
Thus, Christ's people, you and me, must become empowered with the light of Christ. If our faith shines the light of Christ on those who follow the darkness of Satan we can be sure there will be retaliation to try and destroy us.
Lord Jesus, Empower us when we are persecuted for you that we might never waver from our faith. Amen.

OH, TO BE A CHAMPION LOVER!
Using 2 Tim. 2:25, "Be humble when you correct people who oppose you. Maybe God will lead them and (they will) turn to Him and learn the truth."
(Although this was originally written some time ago, I will repeat it just as it was.) Today was Sunday, and I made a very childish, un-loving remark to someone. Yet, no one scolded me. I was met with love and humility. They heard my "self" actions with Christ-like reactions. I am humbled by their kind spirits and hope God showed me through them what is the loving way to react to someone's error.
I am still praying to someday have the humility and love that was returned to me in exchange for my selfish remark. I will continue to pray hard, and hope my friends are still praying for me, too, for my transformation. But, I will always suffer from imperfection. I will always have a "way to go." I will, however, be grateful to God that He loves me "in-spite-of" and forgives.
Oh, God, of small and large miracles, I thank you for friends that forgive. Help me to be transformed in my spirit that I might have kindness and humility towards others. Help me to be a Champion Lover. Amen.

CHILDREN OF GOD
What is a child of God? We find the answer in both Joel 12:12 and 13 and 2 Tim. 1:7. "Yet even now (in the midst of national disaster) the Lord says, "Return to me with all your heart. For He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love".. "For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love, and of self-discipline."
The prophet Joel told the people of the nation, that God calls them back to Himself and is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, of steadfast love, and relents from punishing. These very traits are what God wants from those who would follow Him. Jesus made clear that we are Children of God and since He is our parent, our father and teacher, He will teach us how we are to be and do to and for others. Paul said that God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but of power to be victorious in our lives, sharing love and self-discipline. Only through God's abundant grace can the power of the Holy Spirit change us from being self-centered and vindictive, to being people of God with His characteristics.
Lord, we thank you that you have called us to be your children and we ask that you continue teaching us that we might have more and more of your characteristics. Perhaps, then, we are more likely to live for others, with the power to share Your love with all of the world.

YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH LOVE!
In 1Tim 6:3 it tells us, "Anyone who teaches something different disagrees with the correct and Godly teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ."
What is the teaching of Jesus? "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and your neighbor as yourself." (Luke 10:27)
Paul's rules are not necessarily Jesus' rules. Paul believed that he knew what Jesus' taught--and he did! But having His Pharisee's background, he also gave a few rules of his own to the later churches. They may had at one time been very good to follow and at least must be considered today. But, ultimately, we are to follow the life and words of Christ Jesus and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Most of the arguments in the church have been a result of some of Paul's words. Again, consider, but follow--Jesus!
God, I pray that the attitudes and opinions of your people are not of pride, arrogance, or being stubborn. Guide our thinking as you do our being and our doing. And especially my own. Amen.

June 23,2015 PROVIDE FOR OTHERS
Today we'll look at 1 timothy 5:8, "Whoever does not provide for relatives, and especially for family members, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." Wow!
Although these aren't words of Jesus, the author of Timothy stresses the importance for those who can to care for those of their family to meet their needs. As God's children, He faithfully cares and provides for those who trust in Him. In that same sense, if we have the means, we are to care for, support, pray for, and assist our birth family as well as our Christian family.
God calls me to not be selfish but to be there for those around us, to help when times are difficult.
Lord God, give me a heart that sees and meets the needs of others, whomever they may be. AMEN.
I have two sisters, still alive. One has a small home in Wisconsin and one has an apartment here in MPLS MN. If they should ever need a place to live, I hope they would come to me. They are precious to me, yet I am unsure of how we would be if we lived together. It would probably be much like we were when we were kids. It would take the help of God for us to make it. but if we were all alone, I would definitely try. It would take the best of God's work, I think, to make it work out for the three of us! But with God, I know, everything is possible!

TEACH WITH YOUR OWN LIFE
In 1 Timothy 4:12, we read, "Teach believers with your life; by word, by demeanor, by love, by faith, by integrity." Paul was writing to Timothy whom Paul was mentoring. Timothy was preaching and teaching at one of the churches Paul had created and Paul wanted him to be advised and encouraged.
What would it be like to have a mentor, someone to guide you, encourage you, teach, and show you the way? Speaking spiritually, I really never knew anyone who could or would be a spiritual mentor to me when I was young, so I did most of my learning on my own, lacking assurance that one could make decisions to do good things. Relational learning was lacking as my own parents and relatives had not found their own spiritual path and guidance. There was kindness and goodness and love, certainly, but nothing of the nature of finding these things within yourself. If you were good, you were good. If you weren't good, you were bad. And I believed that.
It is not easy to always be loving. Old habits formed, they like to be continued. But God continues to work on me and slowly but surely the old habits do change. Perfection will never be achieved, but that's where integrity and faith comes in. I just want to be a forgiven person who conveys God's love to others who also need Jesus' forgiveness and love.
God, Only you can keep me on the right path through your teaching. Help me to remember you are present and through your teaching a can become a person of integrity, faith, and love, so my life will be a witness for your sake. Amen.

GOD IS IN CHARGE
From 2 Chr. 20:1,17,and 21 we read, "Thus says the Lord to you, Do not fear or be dismayed at this great multitude against you, for the battle is not yours, but God's...This battle is not for you to fight; take your position, stand still and see the victory of the Lord on your behalf...for the Lord will be with you...As you go, sing to the Lord and say, "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good; His steadfast love endures forever.'"
This scripture is well supported in many places including Jesus' own words. We are told to always give thanks to God in all circumstances and to remember the battle is God's,not ours. Even when we can't possibly see how a situation will play out, we are to praise God and remember His love is always available for us, if we but call on His name. God is in charge.
These days we find disquiet, with the threat of real violence in our neighborhoods or a simpler discussion of which is best, the quiet, serenity of a church or the church whose way of worshipping God is with waving arms and shouts of Hallelujah ! We are not to argue about these things, but to love, love, and again, love! It's easy to love the ones who love Jesus, no matter how they worship Him! But it will be much harder to love those who create violence! And only God can show us how to do that! And we must begin to ask God to show us that very thing!
We are not to be led to disquiet or despair; we are to be careful of that. We can remind ourselves as we sing the words, "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good; His love endures forever." God is always in charge!! Not me!
Lord God, we thank you that we can turn over to you all things for your control, not ours. Amen.

RICHARD'S ROOM
In 2 Kings 4:10, the Scripture tells us, "Why don't we build him a small room on the flat roof of our house? We can put a bed, a table and a chair, and an old lamp in it. Then, whenever he comes, he can stay with us."
These words tell us of a woman who befriended Elisha because of her respect and love for the prophet of long ago by preparing a room on the roof of her house in anticipation of his visits.
Jerry and I converted an old ramshackle cottage into a wonderful home some years ago, which was located on the St. Croix River, the divider between Minnesota and Wisconsin. We were able to add a gabled roof, creating a second floor with two small bedrooms and a bath. All of our children were grown and gone; two were married with homes of their own.
A very good friend whom we had for dinner in the city many times, and was our assistant pastor at our church, happened to be a single, gay man who had no family near. He was a wonderfully talented musician who played the piano and sang like Sinatra. As he was saddened by our move to the river and our changing churches, we decided to call one of our upstairs rooms "Richard's Room." He was delighted and came often for R &R on that wonderful river. This blessing came to us and others--all because of reading about Elisha's room!
God, thank you for the blessing of your Word and the stories of your prophets of old that gives energy to our lives in these more modern times. And bless Richard and our friendship today as I once again enjoy this memory. Amen.
Oh, how I love that river! Do you have a favorite place in your memory? Thank God for it!

OUT WITH THE OLD; IN WITH THE NEW
Reading two scripture messages today, 2 Chr. 19:2 and Col. 4:5,6, "By helping that wicked Ahab, you have made friends with someone who hates the Lord. Now the Lord God is angry with you.....When you are with unbelievers, always make good use of the time. Be pleasant and hold their interest when you speak the message. Choose your words carefully and be ready to answer anyone who asks questions."
What a difference Jesus has made in the true revelation of God! The Old Testament reveals the part of God which is angry over associating with the wicked. The New Testament encourages a care-filled relationship with non-believers. Jesus freed us, but His coming allows God, in a sense, new freedom, too, to allow God's Holy Spirit to live in God's people, so that when we as God's people align ourselves with someone who does not believe, the Holy Spirit can--and does--reveal Himself through us.
God no longer has anger toward us, but gratitude for our willingness to be part of the process God began in the suffering, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
God, help us all to be willing vessels to those who do not believe, that they might meet in us your Holy Spirit "head-on" and "heart-filled." Amen.

LOVE BINDS TOGETHER
In Col. 3: 2 and 14, we read, "Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth. Above all clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony."
In writing these words to the church, Paul is aware of the frailty of human nature. He says, in verse 8, "Don't become angry, wrathful, full of malice or slander, or use abusive language. Instead, show the love you've received in Jesus Christ which binds us together and heals all wounds and hurts." He says to be forgiving always, showing the love and forgiveness Jesus has shown to you.
Whenever the responses well up in me that would tear down another, I need to call to Jesus and proclaim as Jesus did, "Get thee behind me, Satan." The temporary ruler of the world encourages double-dealing and falsehoods and must be put to death in my life. Only Jesus Christ has the love that binds together and brings healing power.
I pray that you, reading this, will seek Christ's love to overcome any hurtful responses you may have in any situation, just as I pray for myself! And may God have His way with us!

THE PROOF IS IN THE LOVE!
In Col. 2:2, we find, "I want you woven into a tapestry of love, in touch with everything there is to know of God. Then you will have minds confident and at rest, focused on Christ, God's great mystery."
Christ--God's great mystery! I don't remember ever having heard that description of Christ before these words. But when you think of it, God in human form is truly amazing! Could God have created a greater act? No, I don't think so.
No wonder some refuse to believe in Christ as the Holy God! Because it is without reason to expect a God to become like us! And yet, it was so! What greater mystery has there ever been or ever will be? None. It would seem to be a fairy tale or fable, like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or Spiderman. But, there is not tangible evidence of the works of these, only those of our God.
It is our God who weaves love into our lives, giving living proof of God's existence. And Jesus Christ who did live on this earth and lived this same love with the people of that time, again showing proof of his Godliness by the written history of His miracles.
As we accept these mysteries, we know the truth-- and can see the proof in His love that will forever touch our lives.
Thanks be to God! Amen.

WAKE-UP CALL TO LOVE
In 1 Kings 16 and Col. 1:15 and 16 we find..."The various kings of the northern tribes sinned against God and were killed after a very short time on the throne." And, "Christ is the human image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation, for in Him all things in heaven and earth were created, both things visible and invisible."
Through the history of God's chosen people there has been continual distrust of God's plan for His people. There was rebellion and rejection, and so, destruction. Therefore, God created part of Himself to be visible in human form. From this, Jesus brought God's message of love clearly to all humanity and yet many rejected, and still reject God, even through Jesus. Some say they have found God through religions that do not include Jesus, but few believe as Christ taught to "love one another."
God again and again allowed and still allows forces of destruction to awaken His people. Christ came and became salvation for many. Yet, some still reject His message, so God gives them up to their sinful ways and separation from Him. God demands of all, you and me included, that there be no mistake or misunderstanding, we are to love God first and our neighbor as ourselves. When we do not, chaos, death, and separation are the inevitable results.
Yet, we cannot be entirely blameless when others attack our people and our culture, for we are wealthy as compared to others. We must seek God to learn how to love others in spite of our differences, and to share our wealth with those who suffer. And we must pray to God continually, to continue to use the "sword of love" to open hearts and minds, that love might be used to change the actions of the world.
Lord, open our eyes to understand that Love must be our weapon of choice in our world today. Amen.

Amen.

PEACE LIKE A RIVER!
In Phil. 4: 6 and 7, it is written, "Don't worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts, offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand; and this peace will control the way you think and feel."
Years ago, I worked with a younger woman who had great serenity in all she did. I admired that and told her, "I hope to one day have a serenity like yours." She laughed, then said, "I doubt that you will ever be serene, Jo!" I think she meant to compliment me, but I saw the value in her serenity.
Besides that, I think she was wrong. With God, anything is possible. I do feel serene; I am at peace. Sometimes, sure, I still fall over the edge, passing serenity, but there is a great change in me from years ago. I don't mind so much being the "friction" once and awhile for some important reason, but prefer the peace I can emanate to others through prayer and caring. For the most part, I am at peace with myself and God.
God, I am thankful to you for fixing my heart upon you, for helping me to see the needs in the spirits of people around me and for helping me to bring your Spirit back into their focus--and my own. Lord, I feel so much joy and blessing for this new peace and trust it to help me to interpret my thoughts and feelings according to your will and purpose. Let my peace flow always to others--like a river, steady and sure, lapping up upon shore after shore. Amen.
Caution: It is easy to believe you have changed, when in reality, a person can slip right back into a less peaceful situation. When Jerry and I first moved to MN, we were in a good place, certain God had led the way. The prayer fit, as did the verses above it. Today, I hunger for the words to reflect the truth, but finding a new way to live, in a new place, I find my attitude has slipped a bit. It isn't that my serenity has left me, but rather, I must work harder to keep it. So, for this day, I shall work the work of keeping my serenity, because I belong to Christ Jesus and I am at peace with God.
I hope and pray the same for you.

WORK AND WILL TO GROW IN GOD
In this time of hurt and bewilderment we turn to Phil. 2:13. "God is working in you to make you willing and able to obey Him."
Paul, once again, in writing to the church he loved in Philippi, says exactly what he believes God is working in them. He says it to us through the established bible. And we are asked to believe it just as those in Philippi believed.
I believe. Yet, I wonder, sometimes, when I look at my life today. How do I know that God is at work in me?Or in the world? I often see changes in others, but they are not absolutely changed. I cannot see the changes in the world that I want to see. And I cannot see absolute changes in me. I can't do much about the world. But myself? How many times do I find myself spaced out by TV, a book, or a game of some kind, and not making myself available to God? I'm sure God does some work in those who love Him regardless of feeble attempts, but every moment not devoted to God takes away opportunity for God to teach.
I think of those who say, "I'm not getting fed spiritually." Do they ask themselves, as I ask myself. "What, then, am I eating?" Do I "eat" God's Word daily? Am I in prayer daily? Do I look for God in my everyday activities? Do I inventory my life to see if I have sinned? Am I forgiving? Whining? Or am I supporting God's work? And where does the world's sins fit into all of this? And how can these things changed in me help the world's traumas?
Perhaps, by starting with ourselves?
God, how do I become in charge of my own faith, to work out my own salvation? How do I tell others that belonging to one another is important? Help us to become accessible to one another, perhaps through a church or group meetings. Help us to share the faith-growth you bring to us.
And, Lord, help us to become One with each other and with You, that we might be a better example for the world to see. Help us, Lord to establish this good in our world, that we might be a beacon to others hungry for You. Remind us in the chaos we see around us that we need You and Your Word, today and always! Amen.
Stay hungry for God and His Word!

WHAT REALLY MATTERS!
In Phil. 1:12, 18, and 21 it reads, "I want you to know, beloved, what has happened to me has actually helped to spread the gospel...What matters is that Christ is proclaimed in every way, whether out of false or true motives...for to me, living is Christ and dying is gain." These words from Paul are also favorites of my husband, Jerry. He tries to live them just as Paul did.
What Paul makes clear in these passages is that we are to understand that what really matters in our lives is that we proclaim Jesus Christ, born, crucified, and resurrected. Paul said motive doesn't matter as long as Christ is lifted up and extolled. Paul was beaten, flogged, and imprisoned for long periods and yet even these tragedies actually helped to spread the Gospel message. This was Paul's singular purpose in life to the exclusion of any personal pain or difficulty.
When you and I feel overburdened with situations in life, we can look at the experience from God's viewpoint, and we can have the assurance that what ever happens is unimportant as long as the story of Jesus Christ is heard. We must never waver from that call. We must make the singular focus of our lives to be always and in all situations to proclaim Jesus Christ.
Lord, empower us to be bold for you! Amen.

THE "PERFUME" OF DEAD FLIES!
Ecc. 10:1 tells us, "As dead flies give perfume a bad smell so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor."
Solomon in Ecclesiastics hit the nail on the head, when he wrote the above comment; perhaps it was from his own experience. Although he was noted for his wisdom he may have found his wisdom through a remembered experience of his own folly, as we each have had foolish moments ourselves.
We have a God who loves us so much that He overlooks and does not remember our follies--those "dead flies"--and we, then, are called to overlook these things in one another.
Unfortunately, the world holds the church and its individuals responsible for our "dead flies." We can guess what they are or were--the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Church's apathy during the Holocaust, hypocrisy, Christians who are Christian only on Sunday morning, and much more. The world sees and remembers the church as flawed, which allows the world to turn away from God without a bad conscience. So the church's follies often outweigh its goodness and righteousness.
So, too, is it true of individuals. No matter how good one is or tries to be, a person is remembered by the "little follies" created in carelessness. The smell of "dead fly" covers up the good and right conveyed by the love of Jesus.
God, May my "dead flies" be seen by those around me with a tolerant eye, and may I remember my own follies and be gracious when the odor is from another. Help us all to have the tolerance and love that comes from You. Amen.
I am grateful, reader, that you are part of my life and I wish you a grand day with sweet aromas!

CHILDREN OF THE LIGHT
In Ephesians 5:8,9 we learn that we must "Live as children of light for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true."
Paul writes to encourage the hard-headed to live as children of the light. Live knowing that through belief in Jesus' death and resurrection we are given the gift of being called a child of God, a child of light. Don't look for a battle, for chaos, for argument. Let our lights so shine that others may see that in you and in me, something is different from the world and its darkness.
Because Jesus gave us the wonderful gift of salvation and eternal life in God, our lights must shine brightly in a world full of anxiety and fear. Our lights must be a challenge to hatred, greed, malice, etc., that the light of God will reveal the error of the world's way. We are to be light to a world enveloped in darkness.
And now, for each of us to pray...Lord Jesus, let your light so shine in me to proclaim that I am your child, so that others might want the same light in their lives. And help me to lead others to You. Amen.

GOD'S UTTER EXTRAVAGANCE!
In Ephesians 1:17 it says, "I ask...God...to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing God personally, your eyes focused and clear so that you see exactly what it is God is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life God has for Christians. Oh, the utter extravagance of God's work in us who trust God--endless energy,, boundless strength."
This prayer of Paul's for the people in Ephesus is a "must" prayer for all of us! We must pray it for each one in our families, each person in our churches, our neighbors, friends and each person with whom we come in contact. It is a prayer we also need to pray for ourselves. (I'm not very good at memorizing, but maybe I'll make a copy and keep it in a pocket!)
Yesterday we attended the funeral ceremony of a great example of God's extravagance in the life of a woman who loved God. The church was packed with women (and probably their husbands)who had watched her serve God faithfully all of her life, and by her service had encouraged those women to also serve God in a like manner. Cancer took her, but she went into the arms of our Lord. She was the best example I know of what God can do in a person's life with her endless energy and boundless strength!
God, we pray for all of our families, as well as ourselves, the prayer of Paul, that we might know You personally and see exactly what You would have us do. And we praise you for your utter extravagance in loving us. Amen.

ROOTED AND GROUNDED IN LOVE!
Ephesian 3:16 and 17 says, "I pray that...Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love."
Paul uses the example of a new plant being placed into the soil. Growth doesn't happen immediately, in fact, sometimes the plant droops a bit at first. But, slowly it becomes resistant to being destroyed as it be comes rooted fast and grounded well. Just like a new plant, a new Christian requires feeding and tender care, as well as time, for faith to root.
Each of us has been a new Christian at one time, when we accepted by faith Jesus' call. All of earthly life grasps for the wind, which gives no satisfaction to the spirit and soul. As for me, I am undoubtedly grateful to have found the process of being rooted and grounded in the love of Jesus. I will never "arrive." Nor, will I ever stop growing. For if I do, my death as a disciple will wither and be lost. No, I must always grow and be nurtured by God through others, as I nurture them, as well. We are One, as each of us and Jesus are One.
Lord Jesus, I praise You for the fertility You bring into the soil of my heart, letting me, always, grow more deeply in Your Spirit. Amen.
I greet you all with love.

SPEAK, LORD, YOUR SERVANT LISTENS!
In Romans 10:15, we read, "Before you trust, you have to listen. But unless Christ's Word is preached, there's nothing to listen to."
A recent word was said to me that really hit home. "The reason you have not been able to change the characteristic impulse to give an angry response to certain statements that bug you is that you get some pay-off of some kind that you don't want to give up."
I was astounded, but the words rang true,. Something within me didn't want to change because I needed it the way it was. Deep; almost too deep for me, lay my problem. But my problem solving mind bit and inquired, "O.K. What do I do about it? Find the Pay-off!" Easier said than done, but I knew that it made sense in a corrupted sort of way. So, I prayed!
"God, show me what it is that my unconscious mind does not want to give up! Thank you, Lord. Amen."
And now, I am in process, waiting for understanding. I am convinced it will come, and in the meantime, I'm backing off from areas of work that may bring more conflict. God's in charge! He will show me what my "pay-off" is, and what to do about it.
The words spoken to me were said in tough-love, and I will always be grateful to that person who chose to take the risk and tell me a truth no one else had ever been willing to do. I did find the "Pay-off." It was the sense of power that I got from my retaliation when I have been reminded of an imperfection. I will try hard to be grateful, henceforth, for this reminder of tough love. And am trying hard to hear of my imperfections without need of retaliation, but, instead, to be thankful for the reminder!
I will always be grateful for that person who chose to take the risk and tell me a truth no one else had ever been willing to do.
God, I will need you once again, and again, and again. I trust your love. May I once more listen and hear your voice. Amen.

WHAT'S NEXT, PAPA?
In Romans 8:15, we read, "The resurrection life I received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It's adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike, "What's next, Papa?"
Yes! This is exactly what I want to be! I want to be "grown-up"! I want to be someone who looks to God for every step in my life! And I don't want to be a worrier that wonders about what that next step might look like!
Well, maybe it's crazy to want to grow up when I'm already well past eighty years old, but it's never too late to learn, is it? I want to be someone who looks to God for very step I have left to take. But there are those moments where old feelings are in charge. Fear sets in, perhaps. Those old habits are quick to set in. So, I must develop a new habit that will do away with the old one. I must ask God, "What's next? I want to ready myself with your power!"
If you are anything like me, you, too, may want to ask God the same question. "What's next, Papa?"

WE ARE RESCUED!
In Romans 7:24,25, it reads, "Wretched one that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Christ Jesus our Lord!"
Yes, we can be rescued by Christ! In this chapter of Romans, Paul tells of the constant struggle between his seeking to be a Godly man, yet recognizing the power of the flesh in himself that takes him to a place where he does the very thing he doesn't want to do! (How well I know this!) He declares that only through the saving grace of Jesus Christ can we humans be victorious. We are unable on our own strength and skill to claim victory. Jesus died and rose again to guarantee He would rescue us from the power of our own sin.
Personally, I have a tendency to become angry over some unimportant thing said or done by others which points out my imperfections. I take these moments to the Lord, but only after I have already shown anger or annoyance. Then, but only after the damage has been done, do I remember to go to the Lord! This is a truth and an embarrassment to me, and I continually pray for forgiveness for myself and for a new ability to call upon the Lord before I react in anger.
Jesus Christ alone, not me, will bring victory over my temptation. Jesus Christ, not me, is my rescuer-- by His shed blood he throws me a life-saving ring to cling to when I finally realize I can't do it on my own.
Praise God, who will rescue us from temptation through His Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

BAPTISM: ACT ONE OF JESUS LIFE
Today's blog will also be for tomorrow. And it will come from Romans 6:3, saying, "All who share in Christ Jesus by being baptized also share in Christ's death."
If Christ's life had been a three act play, His baptism would be in the first act. This scripture is a bit troubling sometimes until we remember what happens in Act 3 of The Jesus Life: He was resurrected! If we are One with Christ in all things, it would seem that the very act of our baptism is the beginning of our dying to self. As we share in Christ's death to the extent that we accept all Christ is, was, and did and does, we do therefore, share in His death.
I think it is more likely that we become prepared for the acceptance of dying to self somewhere along in a second act, when we know that we are terribly human and will make all kinds of errors, or sins, and that God accepts us just as we are, warts and all. When we are ready, we will want to live for--and in--the Lord Jesus.
Perhaps we regret that there isn't some "ritual" to celebrate the death of self. Perhaps it would help to teach us the necessity for wanting more life in Jesus. Even more, than more! Let's pray for it!
Lord, help us to remember how worthy life is in You and that we might desire less of ordinary human things and more of Life in You. Amen.
I'll be back on 6/3 without fail!
